Welcome to the Introduction to Food & Farming Unboxed Unit Exploration!

In this unit, you’ll explore how food is grown, raised, and delivered to your table—from the farm field to the grocery store. Whether you're just beginning to learn about agriculture or want to understand how farming works in the real world, this unit will give you the foundation to explore where your food comes from and why agriculture matters.

What You’ll Learn in This Unit

Throughout this unit, you’ll explore five engaging modules, each highlighting a key part of the food and farming journey:

Module Breakdown:

🌾 Module 1: The Importance of Agriculture – Discover why agriculture is essential to our daily lives and learn about the many types of farms and the people who make it all possible.
🥕 Module 2: Plant-Based Foods – Explore how plants grow, what parts we eat, and how crops are harvested and turned into familiar foods.
🐄 Module 3: Animal-Based Foods – Learn how animals like cows, pigs, and chickens provide food, and how farmers care for them responsibly.
🚛 Module 4: From Farm to Table – Trace the journey your food takes from the farm, through processing and transportation, to your plate.
🌱 Module 5: Agriculture Is... – Discover all the different areas in agriculture—like animal science, ag business, horticulture, apiculture, and more—and how they all connect to food, careers, and our world.

Unit Structure and Activities

This unit is designed to help kids gradually build their knowledge and skills. Each chapter includes a narrative that introduces them to the topic, followed by activities to help reinforce what they have learned.

How to Use This Unit Exploration

As you move through each chapter, follow these steps:

1. Review the narrative or video: Start by reading through the chapter or watch the video to get a general overview of the topic.

2. Complete the activities: Engage with the activities provided to practice the key concepts and apply what they’ve learned.

3. Reflect on the Discussion & Reflection Questions: Think critically about how the material applies to the real world and to their own experiences with poultry and poultry farming.

4. Use the Extension Activities: Dive deeper into specific topics and gain a greater understanding of the material. (Activities take into consideration the 4 different styles of learning.)
