Course: Chickens: Exploring Terminology, Egg Anatomy, and Life Stages

Kids will learn about the essential terminology, the anatomy of eggs, and the life stages of chickens. Whether your kids are just starting out or want to expand their knowledge of poultry, this unit will provide you with valuable insights into the growth and development of chickens and their role in farming practices and backyard flocks.

What They'll Learn in This Unit

They'll explore five chapters, each focusing on key aspects of chicken terminology, egg anatomy, and life stages:

Chapter Breakdown:

• Chapter 1: Chicken Terminology & Lifecycle – Understand the key terms related to chickens, explore their lifecycle, and learn about each stage from egg to adult.

• Chapter 2: Parts of the Egg – Study the structure and nutrients found in an egg, and learn about the function of each part.

• Chapter 3: More Learning Fun! – Participate in hands-on activities such as Washed vs. Unwashed Eggs, the Egg Shell Experiment, and Fresh vs. Old Egg tests to deepen your understanding of eggs.

• Chapter 4: Egg Formation and Development – Discover how eggs are formed inside a hen and learn about the development process before they are laid.

• Chapter 5: Egg Nutrition – Learn about the nutritional value of eggs, focusing on the key vitamins, minerals, and proteins they provide.

Unit Structure and Activities

This unit is designed to help kids gradually build their knowledge and skills. Each chapter includes a narrative that introduces them to the topic, followed by activities to help reinforce what they have learned.

How to Use This Unit Exploration

As you move through each chapter, follow these steps:

1. Review the narrative or video: Start by reading through the chapter or watch the video to get a general overview of the topic.

2. Complete the activities: Engage with the activities provided to practice the key concepts and apply what they’ve learned.

3. Reflect on the Discussion & Reflection Questions: Think critically about how the material applies to the real world and to their own experiences with poultry and poultry farming.

4. Use the Extension Activities: Dive deeper into specific topics and gain a greater understanding of the material. (Activities take into consideration the 4 different styles of learning.)
